Our Renewed Character Interior Design Project showcases how an older home can be updated for modern living without losing the charm that makes it unique.

This renovation focused on improving the layout, incorporating practical storage solutions, and selecting finishes that feel timeless rather than trend-driven. The result is a home that feels brighter, more functional, and better suited to everyday life while remaining true to its original architectural style.

Open Concept Kitchen Layout

The Renewed Character Interior Design Project original layout featured a series of separate rooms that limited connection between the main living spaces. While this is common in homes of this era, the layout no longer supported how the homeowners wanted to use the space.

To improve functionality, we reconfigured the main floor to create a more open concept kitchen. This new layout allows for easier movement between the kitchen, dining room, and living areas while encouraging better interaction throughout the home.

The result is a floor plan that feels brighter, more connected, and better suited to modern family life.

Timeless Kitchen Cabinetry And Finishes

Material selection played a key role in ensuring the kitchen felt both current and reflective of the character of the home.

The kitchen cabinetry is finished in Satin Sleet, a soft off-white with subtle grey undertones that creates a light and welcoming foundation. The island, finished in Satin Starless, introduces a rich navy tone that adds contrast and visual depth.

Onyx White matte porcelain countertops by HanStone provide a durable work surface with a clean, natural appearance. Paired with a classic white farmhouse sink, the combination feels timeless and practical for everyday use.

A matte black faucet introduces contrast, while brushed nickel hardware offers a softens the overall palette. atte black pendants above the island, paired with a coordinating chandelier in the dining area, creates continuity between the adjoining spaces. The result is a kitchen that feels balanced and timeless, with every finish contributing to the overall design.

A Welcoming Front Entry

Storage was a key priority, particularly at the front entry where space is often limited.

To address this, we incorporated built-in cabinetry in a Satin Cosmo finish, a mid-tone warm grey that adds depth without overwhelming the space. Black hardware definition and complements other finishes used throughout the home.

The flooring features a checkerboard pattern in marble-like tiles from the Timeless Collection The combination of white and black tones introduces visual interest while paying tribute to the home’s Victorian influences.

The result is an entry that feels welcoming, practical, and consistent with the design carried throughout the home.

A Grounded Fireplace Design

The family room fireplace was redesigned to create a stronger focal point within the space..

Finished in Tecno Nero tile, the fireplace introduces depth and contrast while anchoring the space with a clean, modern presence. The hearth features a dark grey marble-like tile, tying back to the materials used in the foyer.

This combination creates consistency throughout the home while adding warmth and definition to the family room.

White Oak Flooring Throughout

White oak hardwood flooring was installed throughout the main floor to bring warmth to the main floor.

The natural variation in the wood adds warmth and texture, while the consistent flooring allows each space to flow seamlessly into the next. This foundation supports the lighter finishes used throughout the home, helping to create a balanced and cohesive interior.

Bathroom Design Details

The second floor bathrooms were updated with a focus on durability, simplicity, and timeless design.

In the main bathroom, brushed nickel plumbing fixtures were paired with a sage green vanity, introducing a subtle layer of colour. A black trim arched mirror and black and glass wall sconces add contrast and definition.

The vanity countertop, Le Blanc quartz by HanStone, offers a practical surface with soft veining and understated elegance.. The floor tile continues the marble-like material used on the main floor, creating consistency throughout the home, while the shower features vertically stacked white subway tile, creating subtle texture and a refined, modern feel.

In the kids’ bathroom, the vanity was finished in Satin Cosmo, creating continuity with the entry cabinetry. Stainless steel fixtures and a coordinating vanity light provide a clean, practical finish suited for everyday use.

The floor features the same black marble-like tile used in the foyer, reinforcing the cohesive material palette. The shower and tub surround are clad in a 12×24 white tile from the Mittal Collection, creating a clean and durable backdrop.

Making The Most Of A Smaller Footprint

One of the most important aspects of this project was working within a more compact layout.

Every square foot was carefully planned to maximize storage, improve flow, and maintain a sense of openness. Storage was thoughtfully integrated, and the layout was refined to support both daily living and a natural flow between spaces. 

Maintaining a classic design approach was equally important. The updated interiors complement the home’s original architecture while providing the comfort and convenience expected in a modern renovation.
