Creating a Mid-Century Modern Spa Retreat: An Ensuite Bathroom Transformation

The transformation of our Botanical Luxe Ensuite bathroom showcases how thoughtful space planning and carefully selected materials can create a luxurious spa-like retreat. By reimagining the original layout and incorporating modern elements with mid-century styling, we crafted a space that maximizes both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Thoughtful Space Planning and Layout Innovation

The renovation began with addressing the existing layout’s limitations. By relocating the shower and tub to the exterior wall, we implemented an innovative pony wall design that efficiently houses the plumbing fixtures while creating purposeful zones within the space. This strategic modification not only improved the room’s flow but also set the foundation for the entire design concept.

Layered Textures: From Floor to Wall

The material palette was carefully curated to create layers of texture and visual interest. The foundation of the design begins with the Norwich collection’s large-format porcelain floor tiles in white. Each tile serves as a canvas that elevates the contemporary architectural elements of the space. These sophisticated tiles feature a textured matte finish that adds visual depth, which provides practical functionality for the bathroom environment.

We selected the Venezia collection in Rialto Creme, for the shower walls, a stunning interpretation of pavimento alla Veneziana (Venetian pavement). This classic terrazzo-inspired design features rich tonalities and high-contrast triangular patterns that create bold, ornate geometric designs. The collection’s modern art deco sensibility adds a layer of sophistication while maintaining a timeless appeal that complements the overall design scheme.

A Stylish and Functional Focal Point

The pony wall, positioned behind the freestanding acrylic bathtub, features the same large-format tiles. It includes a practical shelf for bathing essentials. Above the pony wall, we introduced the Melange collection in Bianco, featuring 4×4 ceramic tiles that bring the authentic charm of handmade ceramics to life. This collection masterfully balances tradition with contemporary design, reimagining the use of color to create an unexpected modern personality. The Melange tiles add a distinctive handcrafted element to the space. Their subtle variations contributing to the overall sophisticated aesthetic while providing a perfect pop of individuality..

Modern Elegance: Fixtures and Hardware

The Carimali QTIME collection from Aqua Design brings a clean, simple aesthetic to the space with its sleek, modern styling. The brushed gold finish of these plumbing fixtures elevates both the shower and tub areas, with convenient handheld faucets adding both functionality and elegance. The double vanity, finished in rich walnut, introduces natural warmth and serves as an anchor for the design.

Illuminating Style: Botanical-Inspired Lighting

The lighting design introduces an organic glamour through petal-shaped shades that soften the modern botanical design. Wall sconces above the vanity and a statement ceiling fixture over the tub feature gold leaf arms, canopy, and backplate that add a luminous quality to the space. These fixtures serve dual purposes – providing both practical illumination and creating a warm, delicate ambiance that enhances the room’s sophisticated character.

Throughout the space, black finishes and hardware accents create cohesion, appearing in the vanity hardware, framed mirror, and custom glass shower door. These subtle touches tie the design elements together while maintaining the sophisticated aesthetic.
