We’ve noticed that throughout the design process, we have had a lot of clients ask us what to expect during their kitchen renovation.
As professionals in this industry who deal with designs and renovations on a daily basis, we sometimes forget that our clients are not aware of the renovation process or what to expect during construction.
We have prepared this guide for those of you who are planning a kitchen renovation and are curious of progression and times lines if unknown.
It’s a 6-10 Week Process
A standard kitchen renovation should take approximately 6 to 10 weeks to complete if there are no unknown or unforeseen issues, and/or material delays (thanks to the current pandemic). Timelines will vary depending on the workscope of the renovation.
The design process for a kitchen can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to complete – depending on the complexity of the design. We always recommend that you start the design process at least 6 months to a year prior to your preferred start date of the renovation. This will allow you to book an excellent contractor for your project. Most quality contractors book at least a year in advance.
If you are purchasing custom cabinetry, it could take anywhere from 6-20 weeks from the date of order for the cabinetry to be delivered onsite. These lead times will differ depending on the fabricator, material availability, and time of year (holiday shutdowns, etc).
The permit application can take 3-4 weeks to obtain from the City of Ottawa if required for your project. Permits are required if you are relocating walls and plumbing and should be obtained by your contractor prior to starting the renovation.

It is important to note that each designer and contractor have their own process. You should have a discussion with each company before you hire their services to ensure you are all on the same page and know the expectation.
