Small Space Garden Ideas

Small spaces can present some challenges when it comes to gardening. Most of us live in urban developments which have limited or no yard space at all.

Adding any type of greenery, whether it’s potted plants or your own little herb garden can brighten up any home. Plus, flowers make you happy!

If you are like me and have limited outdoor space, be it a small yard, shared courtyard or balcony, you can grow almost anything. It is possible no matter how tiny your outdoor space may be.

TIP:  All you need is a little space with lots of sun exposure.

I have provided some ideas below that can help you to transform your balcony, porch, or front step into a wonderful green space. I hope this inspires you to pull out those gardening tools and create your own outdoor oasis.

Potted Plants

You can grow almost anything with the right conditions and appropriate sized pot: flowers, grasses, small trees or bushes, herbs, fruits and vegetables. The possibilities are endless.

Planting in containers or pots also happens to be extremely space efficient. You also have the options to move the potted plants around throughout the day to catch the sun or place in shaded areas depending on the amount of sun exposure your plant requires.

TIP:  Be sure to provide enough water and food when gardening in pots as potted plants can easily dry out.

Planters come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. I like to arrange my potted plants together in groups of 3 or 5 of different sized pots. I also like to choose different coloured flowers and plants each year.

Using Plants to Create Privacy

Plants can serve dual purposes, such as providing shade and/or privacy. Making a privacy screen with plants is one of the most practical things you can do with your potted plants.

Tall potted plants or grasses offer low-cost alternatives to creating privacy when you are seated in your backyard or on your balcony.

Another alternative for creating privacy is placing a trellis with colourful flowering vines.

Don’t be afraid to play around with different ideas.

Innovative Vertical Gardening Ideas

A great solution for gardening if you have limited space is to grow plants vertically. There are so many ways you can grow upwards.

Vertical gardening is the best of both worlds. It uses less ground space and can provide you with privacy as well.

The options for vertical gardening are vast and only require a little creativity. Reuse wooden boxes, crates, and latticework. Use found objects such as twigs. Build your own custom box frames or a ladder for potted plants. There are no limitations, use your imagination!

Take full advantage of your upward space and come up with your own creative solution to showcase your garden.
